That could also just mean that sendmail is not running, also for httpd - mine was installed just fine but I didn’t have to stop it.

Run the start command and fire it up.

Try to check what /var/log/messages is giving you.

[root@shapira etc]# /etc/init.d/sendmail stop
Shutting down sendmail: [FAILED]

Will not shut down…
