Johnny Chung Lee has come with a new and simple solution for a (multi) point screen. The idea is to track the IR point with an wiimote.
Look at Johnny Lee’s website for details..
Obiously, we from Labcoding.com love playing with the Wiimote, so we’re going to try Johnny’s experiment!
At first we need to download the software.
- Wiimote whiteboard
- Multitouch app ( if you build two IR pens, for one IR pen use, Wiimote Whiteboard)
- Direct-X sdk (it’s 426mb and only needed if you want to use the MultiTouch App)
Shopping list:
- 1 Wiimote
- 2 IR led (1.5V tolerant Led)
- 2 Small ‘press’ switch
- 2 (AA) battery
* for testing you can try a normal IR remote, but usually this blinks the IR signal, so it doesnt work that great!
Getting started:
First we need to make an IR led pen.
The scheme looks like this:
Solder a black wire to the small led pin.
Solder a red wire to one switch pin?
Cut the front of a pencil hull to get the led fitted in.
Cut a little hole to fit the swith ( you need to do this at the front of the pencil)
Isolate the (+) pin of the led and set it in place..
Place the Switch in position and solder the (+) pin to the switch
At last you can attatch the battery to the wires at the end, and finalize the pencil.
Of course for the multi touch program you need to make two pencils.
The next thing we need to do is to connect the wiimote to the computer for example with Bluesoleil. See this tutorial for setting up a connection.
For single Point try the sample application: WiimoteWhiteboard.exe
- Unzip the WiimoteWhiteboard.zip file. and open the .exe file.NOTE: If the .exe file gives an error you need to place the WiimoteLib.dll to the windows dir.
- First calibrate the monitor with the 4 referent points. Then the pens works instantly!
You can now open photoshop or some other program and start be creative !
For multiple points you can try the sample application: WiiMultipointGrid
- Unzip the WiiMultipointGrid_calibration.zip
- Install the direct-X SDK we previously downloaded.
- Open the WiiMultipointGrid.exe app.
- Don’t forget to press C to calibrate the points.
- Disable the emitter to play with the grid.
